Carol: Away in a Manger

The Night Before Christmas
by Clement Clark Moore

Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.
The children were nestled all sung in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And momma in her kerchief, and I in my cap
Had just settled our brains for a long winters nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow
Gave the luster of midday to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:
"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen!
On Comet! on Cupid! On Donder and BLitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the housetop the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all covered with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes--how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly
That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a goodnight!"

" Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." Isaiah 7:14

Carol: Angels We Have Heard on High

The Gift of the Magi
From the story by O. Henry

One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time. Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas.

There was clearly nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it.

When Della finished her cry, she attended to her cheeks with a powder puff. She stood by the window and looked out dully. Tomorrow would be Christmas day, and she only had $1.87 to buy a present for Jim. Her Jim. Many a happy hour she had spent planning for something nice for him. Something fine and rare and sterling -- something just a bit near to being worthy of the honor of being owned by Jim.
Suddenly she whirled from the window and stood before the looking glass. Rapidly she pulled down her hair and let it fall into its full length.
Now, there were two possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs' in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim's gold watch that had been his father's and grandfather's. The other wad Della's hair.
So now Della's beautiful hair fell about her, rippling and shining like a cascade of brown waters. She did it up again nervously and quickly. Once she faltered for a minute and stood still while a tear or two splashed on the worn red carpet. On went her old brown jacket; on went her old brown hat. With a whirl of skirts and with the brilliant sparkle still in her eyes, she fluttered out the door and down the stairs to the street.
Where she stopped the sign read: "Mme Sofronie. Hair Goods of All Kinds." One flight up Della ran, and collected herself, panting.
"Will you buy my hair?" asked Della.
"I buy hair," said Madame. "Take your hat off and lets have a sight of it."
Down rippled the brown cascade.
"Twenty dollars," said Madame, lifting the mass with a practiced hand.
"Give it to me quick," said Della.
Oh, the next two hours were rosy as she ransacked the stores for Jims present.
She found it at last. It surely had been made for Jim and no one else. there was no other like it in any of the stores, and she had turned all of them inside out. It was a platinum watch-chain, simple in design, properly proclaiming its value by substance alone and not by ornamentation--as all good things should do. It was even worthy of The Watch. As soon as she saw it she knew it must be Jims. Quietness and value--the description applied to both.
Twenty-one dollar they took from her for it, and she hurried home with the eighty-seven cents. With that chain on his watch, Jim might be properly anxious about the time in any company. Grand as the watch was, he sometimes looked at it on the sly on account of the old leather strap he used in place of a chain.
When Della reached home, she got out her curling irons and went to work. Within forty minutes her head was covered with tiny close-lying curls that made her look wonderfully like a school-boy. She looked and her reflection in the mirror long, carefully and critically.
"If Jim doesnt kill me," she said to herself, "before he takes a second look at me --- But what could I do with a dollar and eighty-seven cents?"
Jim was never late. Della held the watch chain in her hand. She heard his step on the stair and she turned white for just a moment. She had a habit of saying little silent prayers about the simplest everyday things, and now she whispered: "Please, God, make him think I am still pretty."
The door opened and Jim stepped in and closed it. He looked thin and very serious. Poor fellow, was only twenty-two -- and to be burdened with a family! He needed a new overcoat and he was without gloves.
Jims eyes were fixed on Della, and there was an expression in them that she could not read. It was not anger, nor surprise, nor disapproval, nor horror, nor any of the sentiments she had been prepared for. He simply stared at her.
"Jim darling," she cried, "dont look at me that way. I had my hair cut off and sold it because I couldn't have lived through Christmas without giving you a present. It'll grow out again--you wont mind will you? I just had to do it. My hair grows awfully fast. Say 'Merry Christmas!' Jim and lets be happy. You dont know what beautiful nice gift I've got for you."
"You've cut off your hair?" asked Jim, as if he had not arrived at the fact yet.
"Cut it off and sold it", said Della. "Dont you like me just as well anyhow? I'm me without my hair, aren't I?"
Jim looked about the room curiously.
"You say your hair is gone?"
"You needn't look for it," said Della. "It's sold and gone, I tell you. Be good to me, for it went for you."
Our of his trance Jim seemed to quickly wake. He enfolded his Della in his arms.
Jim then drew the package from his overcoat pocket and threw it upon the table.
"Dont make any mistake, Dell," he said, "about me. I dont think there's anything in the way of a haircut or a shave or shampoo that could make me like my girl any less. But if you'll unwrap that package you may see why you had me going a while at first."
White fingers tore at the string and paper. And then an ecstatic scream of joy; and then alas! a quick feminine change to tears and wails, necessitating all of Jims comforting powers.
For there lay The combs -- the set of combs that Della had wanted for so long. Beautiful combs, pure tortoise shell with jeweled rims--just the shade to wear in the beautiful vanished hair. they were expensive combs, she knew, and her heart had yearned for them without the least hope of possession. And now they were hers--but the hair was gone.
She hugged them to her, and at length was able to look up with a smile and say: "My hair grows so fast, Jim!"
And then Della leaped up and cried,"oh,oh!"
Jim had not yet seen his beautiful present. She held it out to him eagerly upon her open palm. The precious metal seemed to flash with a reflection of her own bright spirit.
"Isnt it a dandy, Jim? I hunted all over town to find it. You'll have to look at the time a hundred times a day now. Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks on it."
Instead of obeying, Jim tumbled down on the couch and put his hands under the back of his head and smiled.
"Dell," he said, "Lets put our Christmas presents away and keep em a while. They're too nice to use just now. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs. And now, suppose you put dinner on."

Eight dollars a week or a million a year -- What is the difference?
The Magi, as you know, were the wise men-- who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones, possible bearing the privilege of exchange in case of duplications. And here I have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children who must unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house. But in a last word to the wise of these days, let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest. Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are the wisest. Everywhere they are the wisest. They are the Magi.

I was a hair model for a hair show, and had COPPER hair for a few days.
We took the twins to the Shark Reef.

Hula-Hoop Queen.

Claire is ALSO really good at Hula Hooping! Her hulahoop has seen better days (its a little bent) but she still can go for ever!

and one more video!

Rock Climber

The weather has been really nice the last few days, so I decided to take the girls to the park. We've been going to this same park for a while, and the girls have always been afraid of this rock wall. Not today though! Claire climbed it like a champ! She did it a couple of times, and she did it so fast! She is starting to be fearless, and I kind of like it!

Goodnight Animals!

The twins have a TON of little animals. Every single night before bed, Carlie will get her favorites of the day, and "put them to bed". It takes her a few minutes to make sure they are all placed correctly, and she even reminds us to be quiet, because her animals are sleeping. Its just too cute!

Clean to Messy in 3 minutes.

Friday morning I woke up to the girls playing REALLY nicely together. They had mad a train, and were having fun walking over these buckets and jumping off the last one.
These buckets came from the play room though. And each of them had lots of little toys.

Nicely organized might I add.
THIS IS THE MESS THAT WAS MADE!!!! Oh well.

After the girls were done playing, we all sat in the playroom and put all the toys back in the correct buckets. I was surprised that girls actually helped put everything away!

Bows

Last weekend I made some bows with my friend Mandi. I took a few pictures of the girls with some in their hair. They are super easy, and im slightly addicted to making them now!

Carlie did NOT want her picture taken. She was so cute though!

Before school one morning, I asked the girls to go stand by the wall, and this is what they did! I dont normally send them to school in the same outfit, but this day I did. Luckily their shoes have different color laces. Pink for Claire, and Purple for Carlie.

They held hands without me even telling them to!

First Day of School

A couple of weeks ago the girls started preschool! They were so excited and have been doing GREAT in school! They just love it!
Here's Claire. Its still hard to get them to look at the camera!
and Carlie!

No Marbles, NO Snacks.

Im not gonna lie, we've had a few bad days at home lately. The girls are constantly whining, crying, fighting, hitting, screaming, yelling, tattling these days it seems. I find myself beyond frazzled and ready to sell the twins to the zoo before 5pm. Since the zoo isn't an option, I decided to give the 'Jar' thing a try ... again. For real this time.

This is how it works ... NO Marbles left in the jar after dinner, NO Snack. Each morning, I will give them 4 marbles. (since they are 4) If they hit each other, yell, tattle, scream, or are rude, they will lose a marble. If they are NICE, helpful, share, and help clean up, they can EARN marbles. BUT, if at the end of the night, there aren't any marbles left in their jars, they wont get a special snack. We have the designated special snack picked out (skittles). Lets hope this works!

Funnies

I really need to start writing these things down more often. The girls do and say some pretty funny things!

This morning our neighbor Megan was over, and was asking the twins who was who, so she'd say "Who is Claire?" and BOTH girls would say "Me!". Then she'd ask "Who is Carlie?" and they both would say "Me!" This went on for about 5 minutes, then I finally let her know who was who. It was pretty funny!

Yesterday I had asked Claire to get her flip flops on, and she was having a hard time following directions, so Carlie went over to her, and put her flip flops on FOR her! Then, later that evening, I was trying to wake Carlie up from a nap, because we were trying to leave, and Claire came over to Carlie, and rubbed her back, and gave her a little kiss, and asked her to wake up so we could go. Then she went and got Carlies flip flops and helped her put them on! They are so sweet with each other when they want to be.

Carlie and I were listening to Taylor Swift while I was on the computer, and during an instrumental part of the song Carlie said, "I hear a guitar! and ..... maybe a Flute?" The look that she had on her face while she was thinking of what other instruments she heard was too cute.

Speaking of Taylor Swift, the girls LOVE LOVE LOVE her! Anytime any of her songs come on the radio, we have to turn it up and rock out! The girls know almost every word to some of her songs, and they sing in tune to her! Its just cute!

Aaron was telling Carlie that she had to put the lid back on her marker, otherwise it would dry out, and Carlie said "I dont get it". She always says that if she doesnt understand something! It cracks me up!

Happy Birthday sweet girls! I love you!

What A Difference A Year Makes!

The girls started dance this week! I cant even begin to explain how nervous I was this year. After last years fiasco, I was really worried! But, we got there, put shoes on, and walked into that dance room, and I walked right back out! The girls STAYED with the class, and even gave me a thumbs up! While the class was warming up, Carlie just stood very still observing everyone, but after that they did GREAT! The listened and followed directions, and did really well! What a difference a year makes! The girls look forward to going next week! Yay!

I asked the girls a few questions about Dance. Here are there answers!
What is your favorite thing to do at dance?
Claire: Handstands. (um, they didnt do this at dance. but its claires favorite move)
Carlie: She showed me her leaps and twirls.
Whats your favorite TAP move?
Claire: Shuffle
Carlie: Step, Toe. Step Toe.
They both showed me these moves.
Do you love Dance class?
Claire: Yep!
Carlie: YESS!! (she yelled YES!)

All better!

For the past year or so, Claires blankie has slowly torn into MANY pieces. I have asked her a ton of times if she wanted me to sew them back together, and she has always said NO. So this morning she asked me to wash her blankies (which never happens. normally I have to sneak them into the wash, and she usually finds out they are in the washer, and cries BY the washer till they are done!) So, since we were washing them, I asked if we could go to my moms house and sew them back together, and she said YES! So, I jumped on the opportunity, ironed them, and headed out the door.

Heres 4 of the smaller strips. Im sure we have more around the house, but these were the ones I found today.
Heres the biggest piece.
Kim sewing them together.

The finished product. Its not perfect, and we didnt dare cut the left side to be even with the right side. But hey, her blankie is in ONE piece now! yay!
Thanks Kim!!

Pioneer Day Parade

My parents Stake participates in a Tri-Stake Pioneer Day Parade! It was pretty fun!
These Missionaries carried this HUGE flag. And this is where I started crying. I cry at Parades, and during Firework shows ...
The girls LOVE Firetrucks. This also happens to be the Bishop and his wife, of my parents ward. (Julie and my mom have been good friends for as long as I can remember!)
Heres the girls collecting their goodies!
And a family picture after the parade. It was HOT, STICKY, but a ton of fun!
Happy Pioneer Day!

Chore Chart PRINT OUT

My friend Joanna suggested I go to the SimpleMom blog to find a chore chart, and I found a PERFECT chart! The link is www.simplemom.net on the right hand side towards the bottom there is a section for Popular Posts, and under that is a link for her Preschoolers Chore Chart! Its awesome!

Thanks Joanna!

Where does she come up with this stuff?!!?

Carlie says some of the most RANDOM things ever. I probably shouldnt blog about this, but its just too funny.

This afternoon we were at Aarons dads house swimming, and we had gone inside to get ready to go home. Carlie was walking around saying that she wanted to toot. I asked her why, and she said "because I want to make their house stink" SERIOUSLY kid?? It was so 'stinkin' funny!!!!

That girl cracks me up!

This parenting stuff is hard!

Lately, I am having a hard time with the girls. It seems like no matter what, they just dont listen to me! I can yell and scream at them, or whisper and they dont listen. It drives me crazy! I think our next FHE is going to be on Listening, following directions, saying nice things, and keeping our hands and feet to our selves. (Claire has a scratching/kicking problem, Carlie pushes and hits... lovely huh?) I am looking for a good chore chart to make. Im also going to try out the Glass Jar thing, where you put a marble in when they do something good, and take out marbles when they do something bad. Im sure they will "loose their marbles" often, and Im sure I have already lost all of my marbles!! haha (sorry, I couldnt help myself!)

I've also decided I am going to STOP yelling. I yell so much these days. I sometimes wonder if my neighbors can hear me. If so, thats pretty embarrassing! So, i've gone almost 3 days without yelling. It is SO hard for me!

Does anyone have a good Chore Chart template?? Or any advice/methods on how to make kids listen?!

4th of July Weekend.

For the 4th of July weekend, we went up to Parowan again! It was really relaxing, and a lot of fun! We got up there Friday around noon, and right away got the Slip'N'Slid set up for the girls, so Aaron and I could work on the garden. The girls didnt really slid on the Slip'N'Slid, but they had fun running in the sprinkler part.

After dinner we went outside to light a few sparklers. The girls werent too thrilled with them this year.

Saturday morning (4th of July) We headed out to the Parowan 4th of July Parade on Main St.!

There were TONS of people!

All of the participants in the parade threw candy and stuff to all the specators! We had no idea they did that! But the girls enjoyed running and getting their little treasures!

Claire was pretty happy about how much stuff she got!
After the Parade, the girls played in the backyard while Aaron, my dad, and I worked on the Garden. Well, my dad didnt do yard work, but he watched and played with the girls! That was a TON of help! Aaron enjoyed riding the tractor. I pulled a bunch of weeds from one of the rows of corn, but I stopped after I found a HUGE spider on my leg. EW!

The twins LOVE going to the park that is across the street from the house in Parowan! My dad taught the girls how to swing on the big girl swings! They still like to be pushed though!

When it finally started to get dark, we headed over to Larry and Cindys house (Aarons Aunt and Uncle) to watch Fireworks!

Sunday morning we got up and headed out to Duck Creek for a little hike.

We stopped in Cedar Breaks to check out the view from the Vistors Center.

Me, the girls and my dad!

We also took a little hike, and stopped for a picture!
After we visited Cedar Breaks, we went down to Duck Creek, and took a little walk around the little lake. The girls love throwing rocks in the water, and watching people fish.

We had a great weekend! The weather was great, we have a lot of fun, and we enjoyed having my dad up there!
